How Long Does It Take Ice Cubes to Freeze?

It's the night before a party and you're filling ice trays. How long until they're ready? Here are realistic freezing times, and why a freezer alone rarely makes enough ice for an event.

The short answer

In a typical home freezer set to −18°C, standard ice cube trays take about 3 to 4 hours to freeze solid. Small cubes can be ready in around 2 hours; large cubes and sphere moulds often need 6 to 8 hours or more, and big blocks can take a day.

Ice size Typical freezing time at −18°C
Small cubes / mini trays about 2 hours
Standard ice cube tray 3–4 hours
Large cubes (5 cm) 6–8 hours
Ice spheres 6–10 hours
Ice blocks / tubs 12–24 hours or more

What affects freezing time

  • Freezer temperature – a colder setting freezes faster; check yours is at −18°C or below.
  • Size of each cube – bigger cubes take much longer because the centre freezes last.
  • Tray material – metal trays conduct cold faster than plastic or silicone.
  • How full the freezer is – a crowded freezer with warm food going in freezes slowly.
  • Air flow – trays packed under other items or against warm walls freeze unevenly.

How to freeze ice faster

  1. Turn the freezer to its coldest setting a few hours before.
  2. Use metal trays or smaller cube moulds.
  3. Place trays flat with space around them, away from the door.
  4. Start with cold tap water. (The idea that hot water freezes faster is unreliable in a home freezer.)
  5. Once frozen, empty the trays into a freezer bag and refill them straight away.

How much ice can a home freezer make?

A standard tray holds around 300–400 g of ice. Even refilling two trays every 4 hours, you would make only 3–5 kg a day. A party for 30 people typically needs around 25–30 kg of ice, so the numbers rarely add up. Our guide how much ice do I need for a party explains the maths.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take ice cubes to freeze? About 3 to 4 hours in a standard tray in a home freezer at −18°C. Small cubes can take around 2 hours; large cubes 6–8 hours.

Does hot water freeze faster than cold water? Not reliably in a home freezer. Start with cold tap water for consistent results.

How long do large ice cubes take to freeze? Large 5 cm cubes usually take 6 to 8 hours, and ice spheres can take up to 10 hours.

How can I get a lot of ice quickly? Buy bagged ice. A 12 kg bag holds as much ice as dozens of trays.
