How Long Does Ice Last in a Cooler? 7 Tips to Stop It Melting

How long ice lasts depends on your cooler, the weather and how often it's opened. In a good insulated cooler kept in the shade, a full load of ice can last a day or more; in an open tub in the sun it may only last a few hours.

7 tips to make ice last longer

  1. Pre-chill the cooler – put a little ice in it an hour before, or keep it indoors and out of the sun.
  2. Fill it up – a full cooler melts more slowly than a half-empty one; air space speeds up melting.
  3. Use bigger pieces – cubes last longer than crushed ice. Keep crushed ice for serving and cocktails.
  4. Keep it in the shade and cover it with a towel or blanket.
  5. Don't drain all the water straight away – cold meltwater still keeps drinks cold. Drain it only if food would get soggy.
  6. Open the lid less – use a separate cooler for drinks so the food one stays closed.
  7. Chill drinks first – warm cans on ice melt it fast.
